I finally finished reading Life of Pi. I started it back at the end of April, but it was obviously not a good idea to try to read a book for pleasure during spring semester. Even though I was only in two classes, there was always so much reading to be done. I guess that's the life of a humanities major though.
I loved this book. So much. It was an excellent blend of entertainment and reflection. I loved how in the end it wasn't just a story about religion or survival, it really became a story about viewing the world and the power of a story.
These are some of my favorite lines:
"The world isn't just the way it is. It is how we understand it, no? And in understanding something, we bring something to it, no? Doesn't that make life a story?"
Absolutely beautiful. And so true. That quote touches on the reason I chose to study the humanities - I love that a piece of art or literature becomes a triangular communication between the artist/author, the work, and the audience. Each piece of the triangle is equally important. Without an audience a story or painting loses part of its meaning. The part that each individual brings to it.
This book really was "a story to make you believe in the soul-sustaining power of fiction."
Read it.
